If you want to really find out how much the world has changed since the early 30's, get this audio book in which he describes personal experiences of working-class life in Yorkshire and Lancashire. You will understand at a viseral level. Better as an audio-book. Rather depressing reading but important if you want to really understand just how far western europe and most of the world has come in this century.
