Orwell is remembered for his big brother predictions in 1984. If you want to really find out how much the world has changed since the early 30's, get this audio book in which he describes personal experiences of working-class life in Yorkshire and Lancashire. You will understand at a viseral level. Better as an audio-book. Rather depressing reading but important if you want to really understand just how far western europe and most of the world has come in this century.
