Dennis L McKeirnan : Iron Tower Trilogy
Like many others of the genre, McKeirnan seemed to start with a Lord of Rings like universe which then evolves. I highly recommend any of his series. I generally don't re-read books, much less series but I have re-read the Iron Tower series several times over the years. Enjoyed them tremendously each time.
