Admin Tip #168 : Win9x clients can only connect to NT share names with 12 or less characters |

NT warns you when you create a share name which is inaccessible to DOS-based PCs. What you may not be aware of is this includes DOS, Win3.x, Win95 and Win98. Clients with these platforms can not access shares with names greater than 12 characters. NT clients have not problems with such long share names. The length limitation for DOS-based clients is a design problem and will not have a fix (except upgrading clients to NT workstation).
Bottom-line: don't ignore the warning about inaccessible share names if you have DOS-based clients such as Win95 or Win98.
