Admin Tip #277: Windows NT Force Logoff Due to Inactivity

Hits: Failed to execute CGI : Win32 Error Code = 3

Windows NT Resource Kit includes winexit.scr which functions like a screen saver. Winexit can be configured and tested on the Screen Saver tab of the Display Properties dialog box in Control Panel. You set the number of minutes of inactivity allowed. There is a Force Application Termination checkbox which if selected will have the system close all running applications regardless of their current state. Ouch! if data is unsaved. Hopefully you have word processors and other applications configured to periodically save data. You can chose to have the user logged off 0 - 999 seconds after the inactivity limit has been reached.

There is a configuration problem. You have to grant the users Set Value and Create Subkey permissions for the following registry key:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

The other problem is that there are lots of ways for users to disable the screen saver.

A commercial alternative is the utility, NetOFF which has the additional capability to automatically saves user's open files and closes open applications.

Another commercial alternative is the utility, Screen Pass .
