An incompatibility between Microsoft's Internet Information Server 4 and the international versions of Netscape Communicator 4.7 causes the browser to crash. The bug involves miscommunication between browser and server when Communicator attempts to accept 56-bit digital certificates. IIS 4 does not support 56-bit certificates, and when Communicator tries to step up to 128-bit certificates, an invalid page fault results in netscape.exe. Neither company accepts responsibility for the bug. The 128-bit domestic version of Netscape does not seem to have the bug. Users of international versions of Netscape Communicator 4.7 can work around the problem by disabling 56-bit encryption. Follow these steps:
In Communicator, select Tools, and then click Security Info.
Click the Navigator link in the left column, then select Configure SSL v3 from the right pane.
In the pop-up menu, remove the check marks from the following two options:
RC4 encryption with a 56-bit key and a SHA-1 MAC
DES encryption in CBC mode with a 56-bit key and a SHA-1 MAC
Click OK to close this window. From the Security Info Web page, click OK to finish.
Microsoft is still working on the problem with IIS 4 itself.
