Windows 2000 DNS can use WINS to resolve ip addresses if it is not in DNS. This is not the default for Windows 2000. To have DNS call WINS when DNS resolution fails:
Open Administrative Tools
Click on DNS Manager
Right-click the zone
Click Properties
On the WINS Lookup tab
Click Use WINS Resolution
Enter the IP address of the WINS server
Click OK
After this, a namelookup will only fail if the name is not in DNS and not in WINS.
