Probably best suspenseful book I have read in years. Read in one afternoon, couldn't put it down. Its out of print but available in many used book stores or from sites specializing in out-of-prints . Its about a massive wildfire in Australia which burned hundreds of miles, destroyed hundreds of homes, and a fair number of people. The events are real. The people are fictionalized. The author was burned out by the real event.
I have started reading Cornwell's suspense novels featuring Richmond chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta consultant to the FBIs Behavioral Science Unit. The perspective of a medical examiner can be grizzly. If the medical details don't put you off, its a fascinating perspective!. I am reading them in no particular order. I have also listened to several as I drive back & forth to work. They keep you awake. In the Scarpetta series:

The main characters are the FBI senior hostage negotiator, the head murderer, and the young deaf teacher. You can not put it down once you start it.
was even more griping. I haven't seen the . The book was OUTSTANDING. I have seen the movie now although skeptical going in, I enjoyed the dramatization. Things were changed but the essential suspense remained. I thought Denzel Washington was believable as Lincoln Rhyme.
