I have a lot of book recommendations which link to Amazon's pages and reviews. The gifs and jpgs are on my site for performance reasons. I use GifCrunch and JPGCrunch to minimize loading time. The Spinwave site will let you crunch individual jpgs and gifs online. If you get a website and you have many images (including dots and bars), consider buying the desktop versions.

BlackIce
If you have a cable-modem, dsl connection, or dial up as a developer - you need to protect your PC from Internet hackers. BlackIce is the workstation version of their intrusion detection and blocking software. I have done penetration testing and detection. Its absolutely amazing how often and how quickly your PC is probed on the Internet. Most PCs are undefended. Many have blank admin passwords. In such a situation, anything can be done. Its a crap shoot waiting for a malicious probe to take down your PC. A expert might get through BlackIce - the baby hackers and simply curious will not. I don't claim to be an expert but I use many penetration techniques which are very successful when applied to a pool of PCs unprotected by a firewall. When I probe a PC protected by BlackIce, I can't see anything.

Copernic2000 Search
If you have a content site, even if you are an expert in the topic, you will need a good search engine for checking and verification. As well as scoping out the competition. I downloaded the shareware version and upgraded it and have been very happy with the results it returns. The copy on my PC checks the site and keeps itself updated. The search results are excellent. It sends requests to multiple search engines simultaneously. Very configurable.

BrowserSizer
BrowserSizer is a low-fat, NOT in-your-face tool to help web developers check to see how their web pages look on screen resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and WebTV. It controls Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator from an un-obtrusive, sit in your tray, application that provides a interface to resize either browser to the standard screen resolutions. Isn't it annoying to change your development machine's resolution just to test for people who haven't figured out that they can change THEIR screen resolution?
