Registry Tip #118: Disable NTs 8.3 aliases for LFNs under NTFS

Hits: Failed to execute CGI : Win32 Error Code = 3

NTFS generates an 8.3 alias for each LFN for all versions of NTFS including NT, Windows 2000, and XP. This autogeneration takes time and if one is not going to use 16-bit DOS or win3.x applications without LFN support, these names are not needed. This can give a decent boost in IO performance. To disable:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\
Name: NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation
Type: REG_WORD
Value: 1 Disable automatic alias
Value: 0 Enable automatic alias
