User Tip #112: Windows Hot-key shortcuts

Hits: Failed to execute CGI : Win32 Error Code = 3

You can create keyboard shortcuts to bring up your popular applications using hot key shortcuts. For example, I use Cntl-Alt-N to startup Netscape, Cntl-Alt-Q to startup Quicken, and Cntl-Alt-E to startup Explorer. To create a hot key shortcut, there must exist a shortcut for the application on the Desktop.

Cntl-Alt is hardcoded. You can use letter keys, number keys, and navigation keys. You can use function keys but you must be careful to not to replace the standard meanings of the functions keys. Cntl-Alt is not part of the sequence if you pick a function key. To use, just press Cntl-Alt and the hot key you picked. For example, Cntl-Alt-Q to bring up Quicken.

You can also assign hot keys to Start menu items.

Niffty utility: ShortKeys is a macro utility allowing you to setup replacement text or paragraphs for any given number of user defined keystrokes. ShortKeys monitors the keyboard activity on a global nature and anytime a user defined keystroke combination is typed in, it will be replaced with the replacement text.
