User Tip #94: Windows Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts

Niffty utility: ShortKeys is a macro utility allowing you to setup replacement text or paragraphs for any given number of user defined keystrokes. ShortKeys monitors the keyboard activity on a global nature and anytime a user defined keystroke combination is typed in, it will be replaced with the replacement text.

If your interest is XP:

The following shortcuts work in most locations in Windows NT using standard keyboard only or standard keyboard and mouse:

Del = Delete
Shift + Del = Delete and bypass Recycle Bin
Esc = Cancel drag & drop
Esc = Cancel dialog box
Print Screen = Copy screen to clipboard
Alt + Print Screen = Copy active window to clipboard
Tab = Move between Explorer's right and left panes
F1 = Help
Shift + F1 = Whats This?
F2 = Rename
F3 = Find
F4 = in Explorer display combo box
F5 = Refresh
F6 = Switch panes in Explorer
F10 = Menu mode
Alt + F4 = Close active program
Alt + Tab = Switch among programs
Alt + Enter = Properties
Alt + Backspace = Undo
Alt + click on Network Neighborhood icon = Network Properties dialog box
Alt + double-click on icon = properties dialog box for that object - Explorer tip
Shift + double-click on Explorer folder icon = quickly open directory in Explorer view
Shift + dragdropfile icon onto Recycle Bin = Delete file and not send to Recycle Bin
Ctrl + dragfile = Copy
Ctrl + C = Copy function (text-editor, file-Explorer)
Ctrl + X = Cut function (text-editor, file-Explorer)
Ctrl + V = Paste function (text-editor, file-Explorer)
Ctrl + G = Goto
Ctrl + H = Replace
Ctrl + N = New document
Ctrl + P = Print document
Ctrl + S = Save document
Ctrl + Z = Undo
Ctrl + A = Select all
Ctrl + Home = Go to beginning of page
Ctrl + End = Go to end of page
Ctrl + Esc = Start Menu
Ctrl + Shift + Esc = Task Manager
Ctrl + arrowleft = goto word left
Ctrl + arrowright = goto word right
Shift held down from logon dialog until desktop appears prevents apps in startup folder from running
Shift held down while CD tray closes will disable CDRom AutoRun feature
Click Start/Run + \ = Explorer starts at c:\ folder
Enter path to folder and Explorer will start there. ie d:\data
Click file name + F2 = rename a file
Click on My Computer close folder button (X) + Shift = close all open My Computer folders simultaneously
Click on Network Neighborhood close folder button (X) + Shift = close all open Network Neighborhood folders simultaneously
Click on Explorer or Outlook folder + * on numeric keypad = tree of sub-folders under the selected folder will be expanded
Click on Explorer or Outlook folder + - on numeric keypad = tree of sub-folders under the selected folder will collapse

The following tips allow you to work with window/dialogs WITHOUT using the mouse.

The following shortcuts are mouse only:

Double-click window's title bar = toggle between maximized window size and the previous size
Double-click folder in Explorer's folder tree = hide or display the subfolders nested in that folder; works on RegEdit's folder tree also
Double-click Taskbar time = Date/Time Properties dialog box
Double-click in Taskbar's Performance dialog box = max CPU display - double-click CPU display shrinks back
Right-click Taskbar, click Minimize All Windows = brings Desktop to foreground
dragdrop file icon onto Recycle Bin =Delete file
Double-click My Computer, right-click floppy drive, select Format = fast erase or format floppy
Double-click field labels border in Detailed View of My Computer or Explorer = automatically resize column to fit widest item rather than manually resizing by dragging columns
This is actually an Excel tip which works because same controls were used. Try it in any Microsoft app.
Double-click the column head's right vertical line--the line separating that head from the next column head in Windows Explorer in Details view = resize any file details column (Name, Size, Type, Modified, and so on) to fit its widest element
Double-click Internet icon at the right end of IE's status bar = bring up security settings dialog
